1.5 MW hydro project in Rannoch River, Scotland to power 750 homes; more projects in line

A 1.5-megawatt (MW) hydro project in the Ardtornish Estate at Scotland, UK that is estimated to power 750 homes, has been approved for construction last week (May 18) by the Scottish government. The Rannoch River scheme, to be built near Claggan, will also be creating 12 jobs during construction.

The project aims to help the Scottish government reach its target of sourcing 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2020. The government’s interim target is to hit 31% by 2011.

As early as July 2008, renewable energy consultancy firm Hydroplan UK has submitted “an application for consent to construct and operate” the said project in behalf of the Ardtornish Estate Company Ltd. During consultation, two representations were received.

At present, 29 renewable energy project applications are being processed by the Scottish government’s Energy Consents and Deployment Unit. Twenty-four of these are wind farms while five are hydro. Twenty-seven energy applications have been determined since May 2007, including approval for 21 renewable and one non-renewable project. The said figures represent an increase in the number of determined projects “over the whole of the previous four years,” when only 19 projects were determined.

“Renewable energy developments will help Scotland's economic recovery. Working in harmony with the environment, this scheme will generate clean, green energy, reduce emissions, and create 12 new construction jobs--a model of the low carbon opportunities that exist the length and breadth of Scotland. We will continue to support sustainable hydro power developments to tackle climate change and help increase sustainable economic growth," said Energy Minister Jim Mather.

Water powered Engine

Gas prices are outrageous, everyone can agree on that. With the rising costs of gas, researches are seeking an alternative to using gas. One viable option is waterpower; that’s right, water. A new and innovation invention that has been created is converting your gas-powered engine into a water-powered engine. When you think about it, water is in abundance, and it is unlimited in quantity.

The technology has been developed to convert your gas engine into a water powered engine, and the government encourages this. For those who choose to make the conversion, the government offers special tax breaks at the end of the year. A water-powered engine means that there are no pollutants that harm the ozone layer being released. It is the cleanest form of conversion that exists today. Although it is not possible to run your engine on just water alone, gas and water mixed is becoming a popular alternative to gas alone.

There are many advantages to converting your engine into a water-powered engine.

Gas mileage – everyone knows that city driving is the worst condition for gas mileage. With a water-powered engine, gas mileage could be improved by up to thirty five to forty percent.

Exhaust – water powered engines to not emit the harmful pollutants that are contributed to global warming. It does not harm the environment as fossil fuel do.

Performance – gas powered engines are more susceptible to damage than a water powered engine. Over time, it reduces the performance of the engine. Water powered engines are not exposed to the same damage, and remain in tact for much longer periods of time.

Carbon - Gas powered engines build up carbon deposits that over time can destroy your car’s engine. Water powered engines do not build up carbon deposits therefore, extending the life of your engine.

Reduced temperature – gas powered cars can overheat when the engine is not properly serviced. This can create a huge repair bill if the engine fails. When you use a water-powered engine, the water also acts as a coolant, eliminating the risk of overheating your engine.

Combustion – gas creates combustion; water powered engines provide a much smoother ride because it does not create any combustion in the engine.

Life expectancy – the life of your engine is greatly increased when you use a water-powered engine, this also include the life of pistons, valves, and rings in the engine.

There are really no disadvantages of a water powered engine; it is cleaner to run than a conventional engine, and it also is one of the most eco-friendly ways to save the environment.

Micro Hydro Power

Micro hydropower is the power created through water flow, and directed into small-scale generators for personal use. It is clean power produced by falling water in rivers, creeks, and streams. Micro hydropower is best where water supply is continuously available.

Micro hydropower mills use the exact same concept to generate energy on a much wider scale. It may very well be that Microhydropower is the next generation of renewable energy. One disadvantage of Micro hydropower is that it can only be carried a certain distance before it is unusable. Even with this disadvantage, Micro hydropower is almost always more cost-effective than any other form of renewable power.
Most people would love to have a waterfront view, or even a brook in the yard; they are content if they can find sunshine or wind somewhere on their property. More often than not, only a privileged few have a flowing stream and a slope, which are required for micro hydropower.
It can be difficult for some to understand, however, Power is generated at a constant rate and if not used, it is stored in batteries or some other storage vessel. When it is used, power is measured in watts or kilowatts.
After Power can is stored in batteries, these small systems operate 24 hours a day collecting energy, a little at a time, to be delivered "on demand" from the batteries as the need dictates. Power is then created from water pressure that is piped into the unit's jet nozzles. This is how hydropower is created.

Hydropower is a well-proven technology, relying on a non-polluting, renewable and indigenous resource, which can integrate easily with irrigation and water supply projects.
It is important to understand that Hydro installations are extremely site-specific, and the costs will vary depending on the type and size of system and how much work you are willing to put in yourself.
Hydropower has played a major role in making the wonders of electricity a part of everyday life and helped spur industrial development for decades. Hydropower plants provide inexpensive electricity and produce no pollution. Hydropower is an old established method of energy production. It continues to produce over twenty four percent of the world's electricity and supply more than 1 billion people with power.
Hydro electricity is unique in that it produces constant power twenty four hours a day. it is a clean and efficient way to deliver hydropower to over three hundred million people in more than eight hundred countries.

The “How To” of Hydropower Plants - Green Energy Online

Although hydropower plants may not seem like a hot commodity to some people, in reality they provide around 24 percent of the world's electricity. In addition, more than 1 billion people receive their power through these hydropower plants. Currently, in the United States there are over 2000 hydropower plants in operation, ranking this energy source as the biggest renewable energysource in the nation.

Using the energy that is produced by water, hydropower plants then convert this energy into electricity. A dam is used to hold the water back, while the gates on the dam subsequently release, allowing the water to flow through a pipeline that then leads to the turbine. The blades of the turbine begin to turn once the water hits them.
In addition to the turbine's blades, magnets that are positioned inside the generator also begin to rotate, producing alternative current. This alternative current is converted into a higher voltage current via the transformer. The water that has already been utilized is finally carried through more pipelines back to the river.
The advantageous aspect of hydropower plants are that they utilize a system that is naturally in place. As long as there is rain and, subsequently, rises in the river, these plants can continue to provide renewable energy.

Hydro Power Modern Usage

Hydro power is the power derived from the energy or force of moving water. Which are used for useful purpose. Hydro power is being used since hundreds of years for production of electricity.

There are many form of producing water power. Mainly they work on mechanical producing electricity.

Waterwheels used since hundreds of years to power mills and machinery.

Hydroelectricity usually referring to hydroelectric dams.

Dam less hydro used from the stream of rivers, streams and oceans.

Tidal Power captured from energy of the tides in horizontal direction.

Hydroelectric power is less expensive compared to other electric generating sources like fossil fuels or nuclear energy. The advantages of hydroelectric dams is their ability to handle all climate changes such as when demand increases.
